A small offering of Charolais bulls saw a high of 3,100gns at the Northern Ireland club show and sale at Ballymena on Friday 10 June.

Topping the sale at 3,100gns was Pat Hackett, Clogher, Co Tyrone with the 15 month old Fury Link. Link who is out of the homebred dam Fury Glitter going back to Lyonsdemesne Tzar and sired by the 25,000gns Stirling Intermediate Champion Inverlochy Ferdie went on to Kilwaughter, Co Antrim to work for Matthew Workman.

Following on at 2,350gns was the class winner and Alwent Goldbar son Bessiebell Lego. This March 2015 born lad consigned by J Smyth, Newtownstewart, Co Tyrone, caught the eye of A Stevenson, Ballymoney, Co Antrim.

Next to go from Eamon McGarry, Broughshane, Co Antrim was Deerfin Libra who earlier in the day had been tapped out as the reserve champion by judge Gerard McShane. This 16 month old sired by the 14,000gns Goldies Usher was knocked down sold for 2,250gns to Ian Gibson, Broughshane, Co Antrim.

The Supreme Champion Rawbrooke Judge was the next to sell for 2,200gns. This September 2014-born bull was purchased by William Whyte, Portglenone, Co Antrim, was exhibited by Clive Hoey, Fivemiletown, Co Tyrone and is sired by the 25,000gns Supreme Perth Champion Thrunton Socrates.

Finally selling at 2,000gns was Burnside Lusher an entry who stood second in his class for Brian and William McAllister, Ballymena, Co Antrim. Messrs A and J McClelland, Ballyclare, Co Antrim were the men behind the money on this 16 month old 14,000gns Goldies Usher son.

Ian MacCrae selling his Charolais cross calves at UA Stirling on Monday, which averaged over £1000, topping at £1080.

Ian MacCrae, Point Farm, Tighnabruaich, Argyll

Using Charolais bulls helps Ian MacCrae achieve the best possible price for the 11-13-month-old store calves he sells through the ring.

“At the age I sell my calves at, it’s the Charolais crosses that make me the most money. They definitely achieve the best weight for age,” he says.

Mr MacCrae buys his bulls at Stirling, focusing on ease of calving and good weight gain, whilst making sure they look the part too.

David Rock, Knock O Ronald, Gargunnock

Stirlingshire-based David Rock has no qualms over the reliability of Charolais bulls, having bought just three in the 25 years since he started using the breed!

“The bulls I have bought have certainly lasted well for me, and with my system, selling suckled calves, I’d certainly say that Charolais are the best option,” says Mr Rock.

From his 45-strong suckler herd, he sells eight-month-old calves, with his lot of 22 January-born calves averaging £827 at UA on Monday (233p per kg).

“Considering the overall trade is well back on the year for stores, I’m only down 9p per kg compared to last year, so I’m happy with that.

“I buy stretchier type bulls and with those I’ve never had any calving difficulty – in fact, in all the time I’ve used Charolais bulls, I’ve very rarely had to calve a cow, and I’ve always managed to get a good trade for the suckled calves,” he adds.

qr-code-web

The Stirling Charolais catalogues have included QR codes so that a link to the BCCS on-line database can be accessed directly from smart phones to give extended pedigrees, performance information, breeder contacts etc.
To download the QR codes follow these instructions.

Step 1
Download and install a QR code app on your smartphone if you don’t yet have one. Open your App Store, Market, Marketplace or App World application (for the iPhone, Android, Windows Mobile and BlackBerry platforms, respectively).

Step 2
Search for “QR code reader,” and then download and install a free app. The app should be named something to the effect of “QR Code Scanner” or “QR Scanner.” There are paid versions of these kinds of apps, but the free ones work just as well.

Step 3
Open the QR barcode app on your smartphone, and choose “scan from camera” or “scan QR code” from the main menu. A new window should open with a square in the middle of it.

Step 4
Center the QR code in the middle of the square that’s currently displayed by your QR barcode app. The app should automatically take a picture of the QR code for you when it has finished scanning the code. A new pop-up menu will appear, with the QR code information on it.

Step 5
Click the link that was embedded in the QR code, this will direct you to the Society website.

Meeting the new weight specifications

Charolais cross steers can be fast finished within the new weight specification according to the Watson family’s system at Darnford, Banchory, Aberdeenshire.

Their latest crop of steers achieved the following performance.

 The Darnford system: key features

Genetics

Charolais has been the preferred terminal sire for over 25 years. Bulls are selected initially on visual appraisal for feet and mobility, and then from the breed’s top 10% and in particular for weight EBVs.

Damline, Salers. Heifer replacements are selected for size, feet, temperament and maternal qualities.

Management

Split calving herd: a 12 week calving period is maintained in the spring calving herd, and over nine weeks in autumn, to help simplify management. Steers and heifers are separated at eight month weaning enabling a tailored nutrition programme which takes in to account their very different requirements. All animals are allowed to grow to achieve adequate frame size before being intensively finished.

Nutrition

All diets home mixed using the same basic ingredients – homegrown forage and cereals combined with cost effective bought in by-products. The key is formulating diets specific to age, weight and gender, consequently they offer flexibility to vary starch and protein levels at key stages of development. See Table 1. Herd nutritionist, Harbro’s David MacKenzie offers the following pointers.

  • Calves: low-starch creep feed to avoid early fat deposition.
  • Yearlings: reasonably high protein diet, 15% to 17% CP, with limited starch, to encourage lean growth and frame development.
  • Cattle are turned out for a limited three month grazing period and set stocked, followed by housing in early August. They are introduced to full finishing rations after they reach 500kg liveweight.
  • Steers: low protein, high starch finisher.
  • Heifers: higher protein, lower starch finisher
  • Both steer and heifer diets are formulated with limited forage and balanced with cereal and dark grains in order to achieve the correct fat cover and meat yield.

Measuring and monitoring

All cattle are weighed and benchmarked – at birth, at eight month weaning and thereafter at six weekly intervals until reaching target finishing weight.

Health

Closed herd, member of the SRUC Premium Cattle Health Scheme, own herd health plan reviewed annually with the farm vet.

Charolais females sold to a packed ringside in Stirling on Tuesday 18 October at the breed’s official autumn sale. With the eagerly anticipated dispersal of the Massie family’s Blelack herd the main feature of the day. Bidding peaked at 30,000gns for a stock bull and forty-two sets of cow and calves averaged £4,895.

The star in the main section and selling for 6,000gns was the female champion Goldies Lulu ET exhibited by Hamish Goldie, Ruthwell, Dumfries-shire. The 18 month old is sired by the 12,000gns Goldies Elation whose first son was junior champion and sold for 15,000gns October 2013. Her home-bred dam Goldies Hippy goes back to the popular and renowned easy calving Blelack Digger and she travels home to Llandysul, Ceredigion with EW Davies. Judge Rob Adam, Glamis, Forfar commented “she was very correct, had a good back end and great character”.

Blelack Charolais sell to a top of 30,000gns at the Stirling Autumn Sale

Charolais bulls were in demand at Stirling on Wednesday 19 October at the breed’s official autumn sale. 83 bulls sold to an average of £5,674 and topped at 18,000gns with a 63% clearance which is a satisfactory result for an autumn bull sale. The majority of beef suckler herds are spring calving and they are taking advantage of the fast growth rates of the Charolais bred calves so they can sell them at the autumn suckler calf sales. By doing so the calf producers are increasing their margins by reducing the over-wintering costs.

Leading the bids at 18,000gns was the reserve supreme champion Goldies Linford ET,

Commerical Demand for Charolais Calves & Store Cattle

$

picture-4-web

The fallacy that Charolais bred cattle cannot meet the current supermarket requirements has been well and truly exposed by the price and demand for Charolais calves and store cattle at the autumn round of suckled calf and store sales.

This is what the auctioneers had to say in Friday’s edition of the Scottish Farmer:

Alan Hutchinson – Cattle Auctioneer at Aberdeen and Northern Marts Thainstone Centre “The good news is that there is still a big demand for Charolais cross calves, which instead of being sold at the heavier weights of the past are now being cashed at lighter weights”. This was a point echoed by John Roberts, cattle auctioneer at United Auctions, Stirling. “Buyers still want Charolais cross calves because they are quicker to finish and the professional finished will always seek out such cattle because they know they’ll get them away quicker by altering the finishing rations accordingly”.

Sackville herd wins Improved Herd Award for the Charolais breed

The Sackville herd, owned by father and son team Brian and Peter Heath from Hartfield in East Sussex, has been recognised by AHDB Beef & Lamb as the Most Improved Herd of Charolais cattle in England for 2016.

•Sackville Joey with Peter Heath, Angela Price representing Lodders presented Peter Heath with the red card won by Sackville Joey who sold for 4,000gn at Stirling 2015

Sackville Joey with Peter Heath, Angela Price representing Lodders presented Peter Heath with the red card won by Sackville Joey who sold for 4,000gn at Stirling 2015

The award is presented by the AHDB Beef & Lamb Better Returns Programme (BRP) to the recorded herd that shows the greatest genetic gain for commercial characteristics over a 12-month period. There is a separate award for each of ten UK breeds.

The Heath family have been at Culvers Farm since 1976. Brian and Peter look after the cattle together alongside Peter’s foot trimming business. They originally had a cross-bred suckler herd but were keen to develop their own pedigree herd of Charolais cattle and purchased five cows in May 1995 from the Warninglid Herd and one cow from the old Lamberhurst herd.

Through the use of artificial insemination (AI) they were able to access a number of high-index bulls from herds such as Blelack, De Crepigny, Maerdy, Dingle, Balthayock, and Doonally. Heifers have been retained from these bloodlines and the herd is maintained at around 15 breeding cows.

Peter said: “The herd has been performance recorded from the outset. We believe the figures help with management and breeding decisions, providing valuable information showing how our herd compares to others.”

Peter attends a number of local and national shows in order to promote his herd and the genetics available.

“Our cattle are regularly handled and the shows provide a valuable window for future sales” Peter said.

“Farming on clay land means our cows are housed over winter from November until the beginning of May, with the majority calving in the spring.

“We started selling through the pedigree sales in 2000 and we continue to sell a number of young bulls each year through the February and October sales at Stirling, Carlisle and Welshpool,” Peter explains.

“We sell mainly bulls and some surplus females are sold as in-calf or bulling heifers.”

Homebred Sackville Sapphire, a big strong cow with good estimated breeding values (EBVs), won the Royal Show in 2004. She produced a bull named Sackville Adonis who has gone on to sire many great bulls that have done very well. They have since flushed her to maximise her genetic potential within the herd.

“With the market conditions changing recently, the store cattle trade is lucrative,” Peter said “In my opinion, the breed’s size and growth rates backed up by EBVs mean the Charolais can command a premium within the store trade.”

Brian and Peter use EBVs to select for animals with superior growth rates, while maintaining ease of calving.

“Our customers are switched on and gain assurance from the figures behind the animals. There must always be a careful blend of using the figures to suit the management system while not ignoring the traits of the Charolais breed,” Peter concluded.

More Charolais bulls were sold for a higher average price in Welshpool on Thursday 10th November than at the corresponding sale in the previous year. At the end of the day’s trading 36 bulls were sold to average £3856, an increase of £419 per head with 10 more sold.

Auctioneer Glandon Lewis commented that “Commercial producers underpinned the sale and were willing to pay between 4,000 and 6,000gns for the bull of their choice. This is a reflection of the commercial trade for Charolais bred cattle which are in demand by beef finishers who can exploit their efficient growth to meet the current market specification”.

Graiggoch Legend

Graiggoch Legend the top price at 6,500gns

Gerwyn Jones, Llanrwst, Conwy commanded the top prices of the day and the bidding peaked at 6,500gns for his March 2015-born bull Graiggoch Legend ET. TN Lightfoot, Callington, Cornwall was the purchaser of this class winner sired by the 70,000gns Royal Welsh supreme champion Barnsford Ferny and out of Northumberland-bred dam Thrunton Starband going back to the 25,000gns Perth supreme champion Mowbraypark Orlando.
